This post on X (formerly Twitter) claims to show an image of a room crammed with luggage at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Background

Following the Kenya Revenue Authority’s directive to tax personal and household items, the Cabinet Secretary of Tourism and Wildlife, Alfred Mutua, raised concerns over the alleged harassment of tourists at the JKIA. Mutua claimed some KRA officials were conducting exaggerated searches at the entry and exit points, warning that this could scare away tourists. Senate Leader of Majority Aaron Cheruiyot and The Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations Chairman Nelson Koech also expressed their concerns over the issue.

Verification

A Google reverse image search reveals the image is from Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom. An article by Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) published on June 18, 2022, reported passengers’ agony after a technical hitch in Terminal 2 led to delays at check-in while some had to travel without their luggage. Affected passengers took to social media to lament and shared images of the crammed terminal hall. The airline sorted the problem and issued an apology to those affected.

The BBC and Sky News published articles reporting the same incident here and here.

Verdict

Claims that the image is from JKIA are FALSE.
