This post on X alleges Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has introduced mandatory DNA testing of newborns nationwide. Similar claims were also shared on Facebook.

Background

Paternity DNA testing involves using DNA profiles to establish whether an individual is the biological parent of another. The most common samples collected for testing include blood, cheek cells collected using oral swabs, and hair. DNA testing is not compulsory in Kenya except when mandated by a court for civil or criminal proceedings. In civil cases, both the respondent and applicant jointly cover the expenses of the test, whereas in criminal cases, the prosecution bears the cost of the tests unless the accused requests a repeat test to be conducted by their expert.

These claims emerged amid the ongoing doctors’ strike that started on March 15, 2024.

Verification

The CS did not post this on her official account on X.

The Ministry of Health through a post on its official account on X dismissed the claims as fake. The post further urged Kenyans to verify information before sharing, to curb the spread of misinformation.

Verdict

Claims that CS Susan Nakhumicha introduced mandatory DNA testing for newborns are FALSE.
