Posts archived here and here contain images purportedly showing a fire at the residence of Bondo Member of Parliament Gideon Ochanda. According to the captions, the house was allegedly set ablaze after he voted in favor of the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
Background
On June 20, 2024, the Finance Bill 2024 passed its second reading with 204 MPs voting in favor and 115 voting against. Bondo Member of Parliament Gideon Ochanda was among those who voted yes, defying the Orange Democratic Party’s directive for its members to oppose the Bill. In response, on June 21, 2024, Bondo residents brought a coffin to the constituency office, symbolizing the end of their MP’s political career due to his vote in favor of the Finance Bill 2024.
Verification
A Google reverse image search on the first image showing a house engulfed in flames reveals that it has been available online since February 9, 2022. It appears to be a stock image used for illustration in fire-related reports.
According to another Google reverse image search, the building on fire in the other image is from a fire incident at Kenyatta University’s Old Moi Library on May 4, 2024.
Verdict
Claims that the images show a fire at the residence of Bondo Member of Parliament Gideon Ochanda are FALSE.
